Gioiello Estate's vineyard is located within the Yea Valley on the Goulburn River, on the lower reaches of 651 metre high Mt Concord. The entire property is over one thousand acres of rolling hills, pastures, bush land, and river flats, natural water springs and billabongs. Our 22 acres of mature vines were planted on north facing slopes between 1987 and 1992.
chardonnay block
We have two distinctly different plots of chardonnay grapes. The Old Hill grapes coming from a plot that is planted in granite soil. These grapes display wonderful citrus, floral and mineral characteristics. The Estate chardonnay is planted in predominately sedimentary soil and tend to display scented citrus fruit characteristics.
merlot block
There are two blocks of merlot, one situated next to the Old Hill chardonnay so planted in Granite earth. The Old House block is in sedimentary soil and is planted within a north facing plot that is well protected allowing for even ripening and fruit development.
Shiraz block
We have a very special block of syrah (shiraz) grapes planted in sedimentary soil and the aspect here receives wonderful warming sun that allows for excellent ripening and flavour development.
Pinot noir block
Our most recent planting is a special and small parcel of Pinot Noir fruit coming from two blocks. There are 2 clones of pinot noir – Abel on the higher aspect of a small sloping hill and Pommard towards the base. These clones were chosen for their flavour and aroma profile as well as their complexity.
VITICULTURE AND VINIFICATION
Our vineyard is tended to and harvested by hand and nurtured throughout the season. Chardonnay grapes are whole-bunch pressed and receive 100% wild yeast before the wine spends time in seasoned French oak barriques. The wine typically sits on lees for 9 months. Our red varieties of pinot noir, syrah and merlot grapes are hand-picked then fermented with cultured yeast and matured in French oak barriques for 18 months.
