Tasting Notes

The 2017 Estate Merlot displays aromatics of crushed autumn leaves and cherries. The structured palate offers balanced flavours of savoury black olive, mulberries and integrated toasty oak.

The 2018 Estate Merlot displays aromatics of plum and spicy oak. The palate offers balanced flavours of red plums, savoury black olive and warm spiced oak.

The 2014 Old House Merlot displays lifted notes of violets and rich cherry fruit. On the palate fruit, richness and structure are balanced with refined tannins and savoury notes of toasty French oak and black olive.

The 2015 Old House Merlot displays concentrated dark berries on the nose. Rich dark berries framed by black olive reside on the palate with well-integrated oak.

The 2016 Old House Merlot displays concentrated dark berries on the nose. Rich dark berries framed by black olive reside on the palate with well-integrated oak.

The 2018 Old House Merlot offers aromatics of warm spiced plums. The palate displays savoury black olive, balanced with plums, toasty oak and spices.


Vinification

The Estate Merlot grapes are handpicked, de-stemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. The wine is then gently pressed and matured in French oak barriques for 18 months.

The Old House Merlot grapes selected from the old house block are handpicked, de-stemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. The wine is then gently pressed and matured in French oak barriques for 18 months.

Vintage

The 2017 Estate Merlot vintage brought stable and pleasant conditions across the vineyard allowing for perfect budburst and fruit set. This parcel of Merlot grapes was harvested on the 4th of March.

The 2018 Estate Merlot vintage saw some early season humidity but concluded with a warm and dry summer resulting in an earlier harvest date for this parcel of fruit on the 22nd of February.

The 2014 Old House Merlot growing season saw mild and warm conditions allowing for even ripening and a slightly earlier harvest. The vintage proved to be a low yielding crop year which resulted in high quality and flavour concentrated grapes.

The 2015 Old House Merlot vintage saw warm weather arrive early in spring bringing earlier than expected bud burst. No disease or extreme heat events just warm sunshine. This vintage saw low yields resulting in very concentrated flavourful wines.

The 2016 Old House Merlot grapes selected from the old house block are handpicked, de-stemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. The wine is then gently pressed and matured in French oak barriques for 18 months.

22 ACRES OF MATURE VINES

Gioiello Estate's vineyard is located within the Yea Valley on the Goulburn River, on the lower reaches of 651 metre high Mt Concord. Our 22 acres of mature vines were planted on north facing slopes between 1987 and 1992.
